South Chess squad to undergo special training

Southern Region Chess League has developed a new training programme to equip its Presidential finalists before the national finals.

The region identified its 12-member squad on Saturday at Blantyre Youth Centre during a qualifying tournament that attracted 10 primary and secondary schools.

Chess in Schools Coordinator, Margaret Ngugama, said they wanted the region to impress during the national finals, hence developing a strong training programme.

“We will give them books to read and master some moves. We will also help them to train under close supervision. We feel we have the right squad, but we need to encourage them to aim higher,” she said.

During the qualifiers, Precious Kampala, Justice Baloyi , Andrew Kaliba, Kingsley Chikwiri, Rafil Waliyala and Sekani William qualified from the boys’ section.

They were joined by Olivia Kamphale, Alinafe Botha, Memory, Sibanda, Sheila Kulinji, Chinsinsi Nkutu and Mirabelle Chafumuka from the girls’ section.

Ngugama spoke highly of the squad, highlighting that some displayed extraordinary moves.

“If it were senior players, I could not have been surprised but these were youngsters displaying moves that were not equal to their age,” she said.

The national finals will be staged at Simama Hotel in Lilongwe. Each region has contributed players to the national finals.

Ngugama said Chess Association of Malawi (Chessam) was excited with the Presidential tournament because it proves that government is committed to developing the sport.
