Southern Region Volleyball League (SRVL) has disclosed plans to run a mini-league tournament in readiness for next season.

SRVL chairperson, Pacharo Ngwira, said they have secured funding from Minister of Information, Jappie Mhango, who is also Volleyball Association of Malawi (Vam) president.

Mhango will pump in K500,000 towards the mini-tournament that is expected to attract over 10 teams.

“We have been idle for so long. Before we think about the start of the league next season, it is important to hold a mini-tournament to enable players and teams prepare for the forthcoming season,” he said.

Ngwira paid tribute to Mhango for supporting the tournament at K500,000.

“The sponsorship has come at the right time when we least expected it,” he said.

The SRVL chairperson said they would use the event to brainstorm before the start of the next season.

The tournament is expected to start on Sunday at Blantyre Youth Centre where the committee intends to announce rules and regulations as well as format of the mini-league.

There is also a possibility that some games would be played at Polytechnic Annexe court.

Cobbe Artillery, Zingwanga Choppers, VTC Thunders, Lujeri, Naming’omba and Matawale Spikers are some of the teams expected to participate in the competition.
