South kick-starts chess calendar
The Southern Region Chess League will begin its 2018 calendar with a junior tournament, dubbed S and S Geniuses Chess, scheduled for St Andrews High School on February 3.
The event’s coordinator, Kissinger Kabuluzi, said the tournament will attract players from primary and secondary schools, with registration closing on February 2.
“Registration has started. Every player is supposed to pay K1,000 registration fee to take part in the day-long competition. Each participating school will be required to register by paying K5,000,” he said.
SRCL’s former chairperson, Susan Namangale, has teamed up with chess enthusiast Stanley Kenani to sponsor the competition to the tune of K300,000.
“We are delighted to sponsor this competition.
Empirical evidence shows that chess is essential for young minds to learn and master.
“Championship Chess, a book by Dr. Robert Ferguson, is one of the studies which implies that playing chess well increases spatial, numerical and administrative skills. There is also improvement in logic, creativity, and IQ. Chess has also been found to increase both math and verbal skills,” said Namangale, a former ladies national champion.
