Southern Region Netball League officials have announced that the 2016 Rainbow Paints-sponsored league will wind up on January 21.
The league’s General Secretary, Anne Hanjahanja, said the calendar for the conclusion of the league was agreed with the sponsor.
“We are remaining with a few games. Hopefully by next weekend, we will be able to know the champions, especially after the game involving Kukoma Diamonds and Tigresses,” Hanjahanja said.
“We should have known the champions by this weekend, but the two teams failed to play due to a funeral involving one of the officials for Tigresses. This forced us to shift the game to next weekend.”
The league resumed over the weekend after teams went on a two-week break during the festive season.
Hanjahanja has, however, branded the 2016 season as successful.
“We have seen great improvement this year. For instance, teams such as Thunder Queens and Chilomoni Sisters have improved greatly. Thunder have always been underdogs, but they managed to beat Tigresses who were title contenders this year,” she added.
During the games played on Saturday, Shizaella Queens beat Chilomoni Sisters 39-33 while Thunder Queens thrashed Alliance Capital Stars 54-25.
Despite Diamonds and Tigresses not playing this weekend, the former still lead the table with 48 points.
Tigresses come second and Thunder Queens lie third despite being tied on 42 points.
Alliance Stars maintain position four and Shizaella Queens are on position seven.
