Southern Region Football Association plays safe in Fam race

Southern Region Football Association (SRFA) has said it would nominate its preferred candidate for the Football Association of Malawi (Fam) presidency at least 45 days to the polling day.
SRFA Chairperson, Raphael Humba, said they would not rush into endorsing their preferred candidates before giving a chance to all interested parties to sell their manifesto.
“According to the statutes, Fam affiliates are required to nominate candidates once the association advertises the elections. The law requires affiliates to present their nominations at least 45 days before the elections. We have therefore resolved to delay presentation of our nominations to give room to all the interested candidates to campaign,” he said.
Humba said so far, only Fam First Vice President James Mwenda, Second Vice President Othaniel Hara, Executive Member Daud Mtathiko and Northern Region Football Association Chairperson Lameck Khonje have approached SRFA asking for endorsement.
“We met them on different occasions and the door remains open for other candidates to come forward and market themselves,” he said.
Humba also said the body was yet to decide on concerned supporters’ petition asking SRFA to nominate Fam President Walter Nyamilandu for the presidency.
“We cannot discuss the petition now as Mr Nyamilandu is yet to make his stand clear. We can only discuss the petition once he makes up his mind on seeking re-election,” he said.
Other football administrators who have expressed interest to vie for the Fam presidency are Moses Mkandawire and Alufeyo Chipanga.
