Southern Region Football Association (SRFA) has secured a cup competition for its top eight Premier Division teams.

The association’s Chairperson, Raphael Humba, said the association was finalising an agreement with an unnamed sponsor who will be unveiled next month.

“We are coming out full force in the new year with a big competition for our team. Discussions with the Football Association of Malawi [Fam] to include the cup on next year’s football calendar are underway.

“Our teams will now have a good reason to fight for the top eight. This competition will go a long way in making the league more competitive,” Humba said.

He said the cup would run for two months with the winner pocketing K2.5 million.

“It is not yet time for me to disclose the full package but just know that it is a big sponsorship. It is good that our teams will be playing cup games before the league kicks off. This will help them to prepare well for league games,” Humba said.

He said once discussions are finalized with Fam on other logistics, a proper announcement will be made on when the cup would commence.

“We would like this cup to be one of the best in the country. The sponsor has assured us of a great competition which will see the finalists being dressed and the eight competing teams receiving K500,000 as a starter pack,” Humba said.

Fam Competitions and Media Director, Gomezgani Zakazaka, said he was scheduled to meet SRFA officials on the matter and would shed more light later.

“I will have a proper meeting with SRFA officials and I will come back to you as soon as we meet,” Zakazaka said.

The regional association enjoys a K14 million sponsorship from Rab Processors Limited for its league which has Premier Division and Division One.
