Sozobal Ladies Most Valuable Player aims high

Southern Zone Basketball League (Sozobal) Ladies Division 2019 Most Valuable Player Jennifer Lupiya has turned her focus to the national level.

Lupiya, who plays for former champions Mikoko Mystics, said winning an award at national level would be an indication that she has developed her skills having won the Most Improved accolade two seasons ago.

“I joined Mikoko from Katoto in 2017 season but I struggled to break into the team because I was not familiar with the teams’ style. The following season I was voted as the Most Improved Player in the league before winning Most Valuable Player award last season.

“My goal now is to win an award at national level because it will signify development. I know it will be tough because we have a lot of good players across the country. I will continue working hard to achieve my goal,” she said.

Lupiya said Mystics can reclaim the title they last won in 2017 if they put more effort into it.

“We have a good squad but we need to work extra hard during training and games. We might need some additions too,” she said.

The 23-year-old player called for support on the women’s game saying lack of sponsorship also affects the development of the sport.

“With sound sponsorship we can match our counterparts from Central Zone Basketball League who appear to be having an upper hand,” she said.
