Speaker of the National Assembly Catherine Gotani Hara has said her office would help those who are fighting the vices of gender-based violence, rape and defilement.

She was speaking Tuesday when she addressed women in media, through the Association of Women in Media (Awome), who demonstrated against rising cases of sexual abuse in the country.

The demonstrations took place in Lilongwe and Blantyre cities.

“Time has come for authorities to address the vice. I, as ambassador for girls and women, was in Chikwawa visiting the girl that was defiled recently and decided to look after her until she gets better.

“However, it’s sad that her life will never be the same,” Hara said

Representative of Awome in Lilongwe, Josephine Phumisa, said they protested after being angered by rising cases of rape and defilement in the country.

“The media cannot be writing stories about rape and defilement every day. We are tired,” Phumisa said.

Recently, a six-month-old baby was defiled and killed by his step father in Blantyre.

Madalo Banda, representative of Women Lawyers Association, said men should not take advantage of female, especially when the victims are tipsy.
