Sports Council Board yet to start work

Malawi National Council of Sports (MNCS) board members are yet to start performing their roles four months after appointment.
The members’ hands remain tied as they cannot start work before receiving appointment letters.
State President Lazarus Chakwera appointed Chancellor College Dean of Law Sunduzwayo Madise as MNCS Chairperson whereas former Netball Association of Malawi (Nam) president Rose Chinunda was appointed Vice Chairperson.
In a written response, Madise confirmed that the board of directors was yet to be given the mandate to start work.
“We are yet to receive our appointment letters,” Madise said in a brief response.
Madise has vast experience in sports management, having served as founding president of Super League of Malawi and also as chairperson for Nyasa Big Bullets and defunct Escom United.
He also served as acting Football Association of Malawi president.
Sports Council acting Executive Secretary Henry Mereka also confirmed that the board was not functional as members were waiting for appointment letters.
Oliver Nakoma is MNCS’ immediate past board chairperson who replaced James Chuma.
In the absence of the board, MNCS cannot make some decisions.
Other members of the current board include Leobecka Ndovi, Rosina Kazembe, Peter Kandikole, Brigadier Clement Kafuwa (retired), Charles Ulaya Banda and Malawi national Netball team player Beatrice Mpinganjira. Secretary for Youth, comptroller of Statutory Corporations and Secretary to Treasury are ex-officio members.
