SRFA concerned with their teams’ performance in the Super League
Southern Region Football Association (SRFA) says the performance of teams promoted from the Premier Division to the flagship TNM Super League has been of great concern.
SRFA general secretary, George Pagaja, yesterday said that every time a newly-promoted team from the league fails to make the grade in the top league, it reflects badly on the standards of the game in the Southern Region.
“We are a regional league and we cover the entire Southern Region. So it concerns us so much to see teams from our league being relegated from the country’s best league. Certainly, we are not happy,’’ Pagaja lamented.
He said each time a team is promoted to the Super League, SRFA sits down with the team’s officials to offer them ideas on how they can withstand competition there.
The GS pointed out that his league had even gone as far as suggesting specific areas that teams needed to strengthen for them to make the cut in the Super League.
“We can only suggest. We can’t force them to do what they don’t want to do. What they choose to do in the end is entirely up to them. But welcoming back our teams after playing for just a season in the Super League is disappointing,’’ he said.
Pagaja disclosed that the biggest problem with most teams that get promoted from his SRFA is that they believe that they can perform with the same players they were using in the lower league.
“They forget that competition is stiff in the Super League. They may have the raw talent yes, but they would still need to blend it with three or four experienced players to stabilise their teams,’’ Pagaja noted.
The league has seen several of its new Super League entrants such as Bvumbwe Research, Evirom, Cobbe Barracks, Chikwawa United and Nchalo United fail the test at the first hurdle, and return to the regional league.
Currently, a team promoted from SRFL, Fisd Wizards, are anchoring the Super League log table with 21 points as it fights for its life to remain afloat.
