SRFA to unveil Top 8 sponsor

Southern Region Football Association (SRFA) is scheduled to unveil a sponsor for its inaugural Top 8 bonanza in Blantyre before monthend.

The unveiling ceremony will take place at a time the season is yet to commence because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

SRFA Chairperson Raphael Humba said the ceremony would take place as soon as the sponsor returns home from abroad.

“We might as well say that all logistics concerning the ceremony have already been finalised and all we are waiting for is the date to officially unveil the sponsor. We would have loved to do it on July 15 [Wednesday] but the sponsor has been busy. As we speak, he is outside the country but he will be back by July 21. So we are all set and good to go,” Humba said.

The competition will involve teams that made positions two to nine in the 2019 season. Champions Red Lions will not be part of the showpiece as they are in the TNM Super League.

Teams to battle for ultimate glory in the contest are Hangover, Sable Farming, Nyasa Big Bullets Reserves, MDF Marine, Changalume Barracks, Prison United, Wizards and Fomo.

Hangover president, Asad Jussab, said they are looking forward to competing for the cup.

“Playing in such a tournament will be a great honour. We want to start the season with silverware. We are geared and looking forward to winning this bonanza. This tournament will also help us to give exposure. However, our hopes of playing football this year are slowly fading with the increase in the number of people infected with Covid-19 across the country,” Jussab said.

Bullets Reserves Coach Enos Chatama hailed SRFA for securing the sponsorship.

“We are geared to compete in this tournament once football returns. Its just that Covid-19 has generally taken away the football feeling. But we believe our players are missing football and they will play with hunger once the game returns. We want to return to the pitch and show teams what we are made up of,” Chatama said.

SRFA announced plans to have a top 8 competition for its Premier Division teams late last year with plans to launch it just before kickoff of the 2020 season.
