Authorities at St Gabriel Hospital in Lilongwe District have disclosed that construction works on St Gabriel Stadium will be completed by month-end.

St Gabriel Principal Hospital Administrator Ringo Kanshulu said the contractor is working on toilets and dressing rooms.

“A good percentage of the works at the stadium have been completed. What remains for now are dressing rooms and toilets. We hope to finish the project by the end of this month,” Kanshulu said.

He said the stadium, whose constructing started last year, is a way of giving back to the community.

“We thought it wise to give back to the community by construction the stadium so that people can watch football games at a good facility. The money realised from the gates will go towards our operations at the hospital,” Kanshulu said.

He, however, declined to state the cost of constructing the 10,000 capacity match facility.

Local sports analyst Parry Chinyama said construction of the stadium is a positive step in the development of the country’s football.

“The stadium will help provide entertainment to community members as well as enabling local teams to participate in big competitions. We should also expect to see some talent being unearthed in surrounding areas.

“These are some of the benefits of putting up such structures in rural areas. We are supposed to be doing this all over the country if we are to develop sports,” Chinyama said.

Other stadia that have been constructed in rural areas recently are Champion at Mponela in Dowa and Aubrey Dimba in Mchinji.
