Teams from Kasungu District competing in the Central Region Football League Premier Division have said the official opening of Kasungu Stadium will motivate them to fight for promotion to the TNM Super League.

The stadium’s opening ceremony took place on Saturday at Kasungu Boma and was presided over by Local Government and Rural Development Minister, Kondwani Nankhumwa.

Wimbe United chairman, James Mataya, whose team went into last weekend’s games lying second on the regional league’s log table with 32 points, said it would be befitting for a team from Kasungu to turn the stadium into its home ground in the Super League.

Mataya said his team is determined to earn promotion to the elite league and claim the stadium as its home ground.

“We are a team thriving on the goodwill of the community that surrounds us. That same community will be very happy to see us playing in the Super League with Kasungu Stadium as our home ground. That means the best teams in the country will be coming to play in Kasungu,” Mataya said.

Another team that is doing well in the regional league is TN Stars and its General Secretary, Messiah Moyo, welcomed the opening of the stadium and called on other Kasungu teams to turn it into their fortress.

“The stadium is our home and we should make sure we win all games that we play here. This is one way of ensuring that we gain promotion to the Super League so that soccer lovers get to watch big teams in action at the stadium,” Moyo, whose team was fourth in the league last week with 31 points, said.

Kasungu District Football Committee chairman, Wales Kazonde, said the stadium hosted a match between Kasungu Police and Holy Cross Ambassadors during its trial period and hoped that teams would benefit financially from playing at the facility.

Kasungu is the third stadium to be opened out of five whose construction commenced about two years ago.

The first two were Mulanje and Mangochi, with Rumphi and Karonga still awaiting completion.
