Stakeholders recommend grassroots level virus fight

Stakeholders to the interface meeting on coronavirus disease (Covid-19) in Lilongwe Monday recommended the establishment of Community Covid-19 Support Groups to facilitate an increase in public and private response to the Covid-19 pandemic.

National Initiative for Civic Education (Nice) Trust organised the meeting to create a platform for the stakeholders to brainstorm and find decisive measures for containing the pandemic.

One of the participants, Bishop Lazaro Gama, proposed the formation of Community Covid-19 Support Groups to spearhead the fight against the scourge from the grassroots level.

“Such groups would help communities contribute significantly towards the fight against the disease,” said Gama.

An Environmental Health Officer at Lilongwe District Health Office, Chancy Kamba, supported the proposal, stressing that Community Covid-19 Support Groups could play a key role in facilitating increase in public response to the pandemic.

Kamba observed that issues surrounding Covid-19 are diverse, hence, requiring all the stakeholders to assume a role in its fight.

“It is a multi-sectoral pandemic. Everybody must play his or her part. The health team cannot do everything to contain the disease,” he said.

Nice District Civic Education Officer for Lilongwe Urban, Hajira Ali, said the Trust is ready to facilitate the establishment of community structures to complement government efforts in the fight against the disease.
