Standard Bank Chief Risk Officer Kondwani Mlilima said the investment underscores the bank’s commitment towards supporting education and alleviating challenges that affect the delivery of quality education.

“We are impressed by the rehabilitation and reformatory services offered by the prison station. Most of the learners did not have access to education from their districts of origin. The station is their second chance to further education and re-integrate into society as productive citizens,” he said.

Assistant Commissioner of Prison, Regional Headquarters Officer Levi Mahalawipha said the donation will sustain the positive results of the reformatory facility.

“We have an education program at Maula Prison which is part of the reforms that aim at transforming the institution from being primitive to reformatory. The performance of learners has been great, however, Maula Prison has been facing shortage of learning and teaching materials,” Mahalawipha said.

One of the prisoners sitting for Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) at Maula said the resources will contribute to their best performance this year.

Despite the limited resources in the 2021 school calendar, Maula Prison registered a 67 percent MSCE pass rate while the JCE pass rate was 52.6 percent
