Standard Bank extends more support to farmers
Standard Bank says it will continue supporting tobacco farmers in the country by offering them competitive rates on their proceeds from tobacco even beyond the tobacco marketing season.
The institution has also made a fresh commitment to continue running its Mlimi Alirenji promotion so that farmers can continue accessing farm inputs to help them prepare for the next growing season.
Standard Bank Chief Executive Officer, Andrew Mashanda, made the commitment in Lilongwe after handing over a K16 million tractor to a Ntchisi tobacco farmer, Samalani Mingu, who scooped the grand prize of the Mlimi Alirenji competition.
“We still believe that tobacco is the mainstay of Malawi’s economy, that’s why we commit ourselves to helping tobacco farmers so that they should be inspired,” said Mashanda.
Launched in April 2016, the promotion aims at rewarding tobacco farmers with competitive rates on their dollars, while giving them an opportunity to win farm inputs and tools to support their next season’s production.
Apart from the tractor, Standard Bank has also given out hessian sacks, baling jacks, solar power banks, t-shirts and caps to over 700 farmers.
