Standard Bank golf returns to Lilongwe

By Frank Phiri:
The second edition of Standard Bank’s Be More Invitational Golf tournament tees off at Lilongwe Golf Club (LGC) Saturday.
About 160 golfers are expected to participate in the tournament, which comes two weeks after the bank hosted a similar event at Blantyre Sports Club.
Competition is expected to be stiff as winners from the Blantyre event will also participate.
The tournament has been categorised into championship, A, B and ladies divisions, with winners expected to walk away with shopping vouchers.
Winners in the championship, A and ladies divisions will pocket vouchers worth K200,000 each while their runners-up will go away with K150,000 each.
Third-place finishers will cart home K100,000, with competitors on fourth position in the championship and A division getting K75,000 and K50,000 each, respectively.
The winner in the B division will take home a K150,000 voucher whereas the runner-up and the third-placed competitor will receive K100,000 and K50,000 each, respectively.
LGC Captain Thomas Chafunya commended Standard Bank for taking the tournament to their greens.
“This tournament has come at the right time. I would like to thank Standard Bank for such a marketing meet-and-greet through golf. The bank has always been one of the biggest sponsors of golf events here.
“It is gratifying to see that Standard Bank wants to reconnect with its golfing clients after a two-year break due to the Covid pandemic. They have, in my opinion, the best rapport to keep their customers and potential clients close,” Chafunya said.
He said LGC has been preparing for the tournament for weeks and promised a rare golfing treat.
“We are on top of our game. We have been working hard for the whole month in the build-up to this event. We have the best fairways and greens at the moment and I am sure the golfers will enjoy this outing,” he said.
