Standard Bank Quarterfinals gross K14m

An estimated K14 million was realised in gate revenue from Standard Bank Knock-Out Cup quarterfinals played in Lilongwe and Blantyre over the weekend.

However, the figure raises many questions as there was a large turnout in some games. This is an indication that gate revenue management remains a big challenge in Malawi football.

The match between Big Bullets and Moyale Barracks at Civo Stadium in Lilongwe realised about K7.5 million, despite the venue being filled to capacity.

Be Forward Wanderers and Red Lions match at Kamuzu Stadium grossed K4,720, 740. Nomads and the Lions each earned K715, 797.05, whereas the remainder was shared amongst Football Association of Malawi (Fam), ground owners, police and stewards.

A total of K1.4 million was collected at Silver Stadium in a game between Silver Strikers and Blue Eagles.

Silver and Eagles each earned K215, 000. Civo United and Dedza Young Soccer Stars match grossed K600, 000.

On Monday, Wanderers treasurer, Davie Msadala said gross revenue doesn’t reflect the large turnout.

“A lot of money is also going towards security. The number of security personnel was on the higher side at 150 police officers and 120 stewards for that game,” Msadala claimed.

Silver acting general secretary, Fred Kalonga also expressed dissatisfaction with the gate proceeds.

“As Silver, we are not happy with collection for Saturday looking at the crowd that came to the match, but anyway maybe we will appreciate after looking at the breakdown for various expenditures.”

The competitions’ chairperson, Jabba Alide, yesterday said he would reserve his comment on the money while waiting for a compiled report on the gate revenue.

Bullets marched to the semifinals after a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Moyale at Civo Stadium to set up a tie against Civo United, who booted out Dedza following a 2-0 victory on Friday at the same venue.

In another semi-final clash, Wanderers date Eagles after edging out Red Lions 1-0, whereas the police officers knocked out holders, Silver by the same margin.
