Standard Bank wins best employer award
Standard Bank Malawi has been named Malawi’s best employer for the year 2015 in the Employers Consultative Association of Malawi (Ecam) Top Employers Awards.
The awards ceremony took place in Lilongwe Friday evening and saw Old Mutual Malawi Limited grabbing the second position while Total Malawi is on third position.
The awards also saw Southern Region Water Board winning the labour compliance category with Standard Bank and Lilongwe Water Board taking second and third positions respectively.
TNM was named the best in HIV and wellness programmes and was followed by Total Malawi Limited and Illovo Sugar Malawi Limited respectively.
In gender balance category, Standard Bank was named the best while NBS Bank came second and Old Mutual took third position.
Lilongwe Water Board was named the best in training and human resource development followed by Agora Limited and Total Malawi.
In corporate social responsibility category, TNM was named the best followed by Standard Bank while Lilongwe Water Board was third.
Illovo was also named the best in the category of occupation safety and health and was followed by Total Malawi and Combined Cargo Malawi Limited respectively.
G4S, with 8940 employees was recognised as the largest employer, followed by Illovo with 8634 employees and AHL Group with 4291 was the third.
Ecam president, Emmanuel Banda, said the awards were introduced as one way of motivating the companies.
“This is Ecam’s effort to improve excellence in its membership. It’s our way of encouraging best practices in the business sector,” Banda said.
Ministry of Labour principal secretary, Patrick Kabambe, said the event was important.
“We can’t talk about sustainable poverty reduction if people don’t have good jobs,” Kabambe said.
