State House defends Lazarus Chakwera’s travels
The State House has dismissed assertions that President Lazarus Chakwera spends much of his time on the road, claiming that, for the 15 months that he has been in power, he has spent 80 percent of his time working from the office.
Acting Presidential Secretary Anthony Kasunda said this Monday during the regular bi-weekly briefings that take place at the State House.
However, Kasunda said: “You will definitely agree that the President should go out and appreciate all the development projects that are taking place.”
He added that Chakwera needed to, when necessary, meet stakeholders and appreciate what they are doing for the country.
“So, be assured that the President has not departed from his policy but you also do not expect the President not to go out and appreciate developments that are happening,” Kasunda said.
Some of the events Chakwera has, so far, attended in September include the graduation ceremony at Catholic University of Malawi in Chiradzulu; silver jubilee for Archbishop Thomas Luke Msusa and inspection of Nsanje-Marka railway.
Earlier at the press briefing, State House Director of Communications Sean Kampondeni said Chakwera had an “active and busy” week when he virtually participated in a number of events at the United Nations General Assembly.
Mathews Kasanda is a journalist who holds a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism from University of Malawi (The Polytechnic).
In 2015, Media Institute of Southern Africa awarded him the Best Print Media Education Journalist of the Year accolade.
