State House should be ashamed

Auditor General Stevenson Kamphasa has told parliamentarians that State House is frustrating government auditors from conducting the headcount for staff at the State House.

Kamphasa said his office has always engaged the State House to conduct the headcount but the officials there have always been elusive.

This is a shame of huge proportion and is a disgrace to this nation. How long should Malawi be a regional or international laughing stock?

Definitely, President Peter Mutharika and Democratic Progressive Party cannot have State House function in such a scandalous manner under their watch.

It is expected that the President and his State House staff should fight for the country to take steps in the right direction rather than fight or frustrate those who want to root out the country’s major vice – corruption.

Corruption has dominated the discourse of the country’s stagnation in development as the major reason Malawi is not developing.

And one explanation for prevalent corrupt tendencies such as having more than 2,300 ghost workers in the civil service is consistently advanced, namely poor, corrupt and self-serving leadership.

Political leaders are in the forefront of perpetuating theft. Majority public servants are thieves. In short, Malawi has become a typical banana republic and probably the only one left in the world.

So it is so disheartening to hear that people and agencies who are supposed to set good examples in good governance are the very same people who are trying hard to frustrate the fight against corruption.

The country cannot win the war against corruption if the government creates sacred political cows that are so diligently shielded.

The citizenry’s constitutional expectation is that the President and DPP will provide strong, steady, visionary, ethical and sacrificial leadership – which they promised in their manifesto – rather than practising destructive leadership whereby Malawians are fed to State House insubordination news day in, day out.

In fact, State House should be ashamed of frustrating the fight against corruption.
