Chimwemwe Idana leaves People’s Team

Nyasa Big Bullets’ empire Tuesday received a huge blow after the club confirmed that midfielder Chimwemwe Idana had left the side after failing to agree on contract extension terms.

Idana becomes the third player to leave Bullets as a free agent following departures of winger Misheck Selemani to Prison FC of Tanzania and striker Hassan Kajoke.

The People’s Team website reported Tuesday that the Flames midfielder had ended his six-year spell with the club, having turned down Bullets’ offer.

“Nyasa Big Bullets can confirm that Chimwemwe Idana has left the club with immediate effect after failing to agree on contract extension terms. His current deal ends on 21 February 2023.

Idana, who was our third captain, joined The People’s Team through our reserves in 2017 before earning his promotion to the first team in the 2018-19 season.

“We wish Idana all the best for the future and thank him for his contributions to the club,” reported the website.

However, our sources at Bullets contradicted on the terms which Idana was demanding.

The first source said Idana was demanding K8 million signing-on fee but the other one said the playmaker wanted K4.5 million.

“It is not true that Idana wanted K8 million. They should be honest. He asked for K4.5 million, which the club refused to pay,” the second source said.

Idana refused to comment, referring us to his manager Davie Matemba, who equally did not want to comment.

However, earlier Tuesday, Matemba told one of the local stations that they were discussing contractual issues with Bullets only.

Idana has been heavily linked with moves to Bullets rivals, Mighty Mukuru Wanderers, and Silver Strikers.

Wanderers spokesperson Clement Stambuli said they had not approached the player.

“Don’t follow whatever the social media is reporting. We have never contacted the player. We follow transfer procedures. If there is any development, we release statements,” he said.

Similarly, Silver Board Chairperson George Kaudza Masina said the player was not on their wish list.

During his six-year stay at Bullets, Idana won two Charity Shields, four TNM Super League titles, the Airtel Top 8 Cup and the FDH Bank Cup.

Idana was Player of The Season in the 2020-21 campaign.
