Angry supporters manhandled Chitipa United striker, Abel Mwakilama, on Sunday when he was celebrating scoring his third goal in a 3-1 win over Zolozolo United in Mzuzu.
Mwakilama, 19, who leads the Simama Premier Division’s goal-scoring chart with 34 goals, fired the visitors into the lead from the penalty spot in the 30th minute.
Shortly afterwards, the visitors’ Captain, Irvin Mwakapenda, was sent off.
Despite the numerical advantage, Zolozolo, who were hammered 8-0 by Be Forward Wanderers in a Fisd Challenge Cup quarter final match the previous week, conceded again.
Mwakilama tapped in his second on the stroke of half-time.
With over 20 minutes remaining, the striker completed his hat-trick and ran towards the opposition’s right corner to celebrate.
But some home supporters reacted by grabbing him by the neck and pushed him down.
The match was eventually stopped for 25 minutes and when play resumed, Mwakilama was rushed to hospital.
He nearly missed a bus to Blantyre where he is expected to join Malawi Under-20 National Football Team. Fortunately, he was eventually discharged and managed to catch the bus to Blantyre for the camp training.
Chitipa Coach, Rober t Mzinza, was bitter with the home supporters’ reaction, saying they behaved like they were still in the ancient times.
But his counterpart, William Kanyenda, backed the supporters, saying it was unacceptable for the player to celebrate towards the home fans.
“In most cases, when you score, keep in mind that your opponents’ supporters are angry. So, in this case, he ran towards them. What was he trying to achieve?” Kanyenda wondered.
