After 11 years of writing poetry, 22-year-old Kagwa OFC Dzonzi as known in the writing circles has finally written a poetry anthology No Longer a Citizen in a quest to take his literary work to greater heights.
The third year Social Sciences student at the Mzuzu University (Mzuni) said he has all along been inspired to write more about Malawians, the world and also his personal life and strives to make the reading experience of all cadres of people that come across his work enjoyable.
“Writing is in my DNA that’s why I am able to tackle on almost every subject hat concerns the human kind, I have people that have inspired and nurtured my work this far and I am so ready to conquer the world with my pen,” said Dzonzi in a recent interview.
The persona in the No Longer a Citizen, Dzonzi said laments of the social and economic times that Malawi is facing and thus resorts to escaping the motherland for better fortunes beyond the borders.
“I believe in giving people what they deserve and also strive to stick to the everyday life realities, this is why in the No Longer a Citizen you stumble on this man who toils from sunrise to sunset to make ends meet but to no avail, and this is what a majority of Malawians are going through right now,” he explained.
The other poems in the collection said the seasoned writer weigh in more on democracy [its merits and demerits], love, poverty, suffering, moral decay and exploitation.
He said the themes were strategically picked by looking around on news that frequently makes headlines in the local media and thus thought of amplifying the muted voices on such matters through verses.
The book project started in September 2016, and is projected to hit the market by December 2017 should he manage to raise the needed K1.4 million for publishing and launching.
Directed by Professor Klaus Fiedler under the Department of Theology and Religious Studies, Dzonzi becomes the first student to publish a book under Mzuni Press since its establishment in the year 1997.
“So far I am proud of the strides made and I am appealing for support from well-wishers to help me raise the money for the final stages of this anthology.”
This far Dzonzi also a radio personality at Radio ABC in Mzuzu has had his work published in local newspapers and in Germany.
