Students obtain injunction against exams admin

BY FESTON MALEKEZO

Students at Chancellor College, a constituent college of the University of Malawi, have obtained an injunction stopping management from administering supplementary examinations.

The exams were scheduled to start on Monday this week.

Chancellor College Students Union (Succ) president, Raphael Nedi, said over 500 students have outstanding balances with the school and the management has stopped them from accessing their portals.

“This means that these students have not yet seen their examination results. Given, it is difficult for them to know if they are taking supplementary examinations or not,” he said.

Nedi said the students first approached the management to extend time scheduled for the supplementary examinations from the initial June 25 to another date next month.

“We suggested this to give time to those who have not yet paid outstanding balances. We also suggested that there should be a waiver to those students who are needy to be given chance to sit for the exams even though they have not yet settled their balances. But we were not heard and management went ahead to administer the examinations,” he said.

In a memo dated June 25 2018 addressed to all staff at Chancellor College, Registrar, Mary Wasiri, wrote about shifting the examination timetable to a date yet to be announced.

“We would like to inform you that that there has been a disruption on this morning’s supplementary examination timetable. The confusion has been caused by what Chancellor College Students Union were circulating to the effect that they have obtained an order of injunction…

“As management, we have not been served with a copy of the injunction although we have been informed through telephone conversation that the injunction has been served through the office of the university registrar. We are still in the process of getting details of the restraining order, and, once we get guidance on the way forward, we will advise on how we will proceed with the examination timetable,” reads the memo in part.

An inter-partes hearing for the interlocutory injunction is expected to be heard today.

Meanwhile, the students have appealed to well-wishers to help needy students with financial support to settle their balances.
