STVV coach praises under-23 character

By Mabvuto Kambuwe:

Belgian club STVV Coach, Marc Brys, has heaped praises on Malawi under-23 national football team, despite beating them 3-1 in a training match played on Tuesday.

In a post-match interview, the STVV mentor singled out talented youngster Peter Banda after an impressive performance during the game.

“It is an ambitious team with players who are eager. I like it. They have two quick strikers especially the young guy behind the strikers, number 20. I like him most; he is too mobile,” he said.

Brys said Flames Coach, Ronny van Geneugden (RVG), is a respected coach back home in Belgium despite registering poor results with the Flames.

The Flames have, under RVG, won twice in 20 games, the rest being 10 draws and eight losses since he took over in April 2017.

Under-23 Coach, Meke Mwase, said he was impressed with the performance of his charges despite that they lost to STVV.

“We played very good football but we have the same problem of failing to score [many goals]. We need to find a solution. I am very sure that when meeting Zambia, we will be sharp upfront,” Mwase said.

The under-23 will camp in Belgium until March 3 before proceeding to Egypt for a friendly.

During the first match in Belgium, Mwase used two different squads in each half.

Juma Yatina scored the consolation goal for the junior Flames.

The junior Flames are preparing for the Under-23 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Zambia next month.

Malawi advanced to the second round after beating Botswana 3-2 on aggregate.

The under-23 team won 2-1 in Botswana before a 1-1 draw at Kamuzu Stadium.
