Sudanese giants sign Gerald Phiri Jnr

PUTTING PEN TO PAPER—Phiri Junior

Sudanese giants Al Hilal have completed the signing of Flames attacking midfielder Gerald Phiri Junior from DStv Premiership side Baroka FC on a two-year deal.

The versatile midfielder completed a medical in Khartoum on Saturday to seal the deal.

His manager Paul Mitchel of Siyavuma Sports Group confirmed the development.

“I am happy for him because he wanted a fresh challenge. The team has a top coach and technical panel from Portugal. The deal is also good financially; we both travelled to Sudan to meet the club officials who hosted us impeccably,” said Mitchel, who also manages another Flames star Robin Ngalande.

The 1.8 metres tall forward is an efficient footballer, who is known for scoring goals from free kicks.

Phiri Jnr has been included in the Flames squad to face Cameroon and Mozambique next week.

The former Mighty Wanderers player notified his fans about the latest development on his Facebook page after completing the deal.

“I just want to say a big thank you to Baroka FC for the great and wonderful years we had together. Time has come to turn a new page and say good bye. I do so with deep appreciation for each of you. Thank you to my management as well,” he wrote on his page.

At Baroka, he made 52 appearances for the Limpopo-based club after joining in 2019 from Ajax Cape Town (now Cape Town Spurs).

He joined Bidvest Wits after impressive displays with Zimbabwe side Caps United.

At Wits, he made three appearances but scored a single goal. But he had loan spells at Platinum FC in South Africa and Township Rollers in Botswana.

During the 2019 Cosafa Cup in South Africa, he was voted as player of the tournament, having scored thrice and provided three assists in five matches.

At Hilal, he will have a chance to play in the Caf Champions League. Hilal are in the group stages of the elite continental club competition after eliminating Rivers United of Nigeria 2-1 on aggregate.
