Sulom, Fam collide over Cecafa games

Football Association of Malawi (Fam) and Super League of Malawi (Sulom) have collided over Malawi national football team, the Flames, invitation to 2015 Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup in Ethiopia.

Sulom general secretary, William Banda, on Sunday ruled out the possibility of exempting some teams from TNM Super League fixtures to accomodate the Flames engagement that will run until December 6, 2015.

“We have already been affected by the two cups [Carlsberg Cup and Standard Bank Knock-Out Cup. This Cecafa is not on

our harmonised calendar, and we cannot accommodate more postponements,” Banda insisted.

“We want the season to end on December 27, 2015, and if we entertain further postponements, it means the season will spill over to next year and this will be costly for the clubs.”

However, Fam general secretary, Suzgo Nyirenda, on Sunday downplayed the fact that the Cecafa assignment is not on the national calendar, adding that by the time the Flames leave for Ethiopia there will be few league games remaining.

“We will be talking to the Super League over this. We expect that if a team has contributed more than three players to the national team they will be exempted. Sure, the Cecafa games are not on Fifa calendar, but Fifa just approves them,” Nyirenda said.

However, Banda insisted that clubs that will release players for Cecafa, would be doing so at their own cost. Bullets and Wanderers could be affected as they have contributed over four players each.

Meanwhile, Flames coach Ernest Mtawali has named a 27-member squad that went into camp yesterday ahead of Cecafa, with Civo United’s Nelson Kangunje, Dan Msimuko and Dedza Young Soccer captain, Chisomo Mpachika as notable new faces.

Be Forward Wanderers attacker, Jabulani Linje and defender Boston Kabango have been included alongside Mozambique-based Chimango Kayira, Simplex Nthala, Chawanagwa Kawonga and South Africa’s Bidvest Wits midfielder, Gerald Phiri Jnr.
