Sunbird donates towards Takulandirani Tourism Expo

SUNBIRD Hotels and Resorts has injected K5 million in sponsorship towards the organisation of the first-ever Malawi Tourism Expo. The expo will take place in Lilongwe from August 30 to September 1 2017.

This makes Sunbird the platinum sponsor of the Tourism Expo. Speaking after receiving the cheque on Friday, Director of Tourism in the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Tourism, Isaac Katopola, said the expo has received tremendous support and a lot of exhibitors have confirmed their participation.

Said Katopola: “All preparations are going on well and we are set for this first Takulandilani Tourism Expo in Malawi. Over 350 participants are expected to participate.”

According to Katopola, tourism buyers from Zimbabwe, South Africa, Zambia, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and China are also coming to network and learn more about the Malawi tourism products with a view to bring more tourists into Malawi.

“Tourism Expos promote domestic tourism, regional tourism as well as international tourism and they are a new strategy of promoting destinations in a more cost effective manner,” he said.

Group Sales Marketing Manager for Sunbird Hotels and Resorts, Levi Nkunika, said, as the biggest hotel chain in Malawi, they want to support government efforts to grow the national tourism cake.

“Tourism plays an important part in national development and, therefore, Sunbird, as a hotel chain would like to make sure that we support government in its efforts to promote the industry. When the tourism national cake grows, the economy also grows, creating more businesses, jobs and better lives,” said Nkunika.

Sunbird Hotels runs eight establishments that include Capital, Mount Soche, Mzuzu, Lilongwe, Nkopola, Ku Chawe, Thawale and Livingstonia.
