Sunbird dresses Nyambadwe Hill

In an effort to assist the government in its fight against deforestation, Sunbird Tourism Limited recently planted 1,500 tree seedlings at a site on Nyambadwe Hill in Blantyre.

The company has been planting tree seedlings for three consecutive years.

Sunbird, in collaboration with Blantyre City Council, officially launched the initiative on Friday, February 17, during a tree planting ceremony in Blantyre.

Sunbird’s Chief Executive Officer , Yusuf Olela, described the initiative as a sign of Sunbird’s continued support to Blantyre City Council in “making Blantyre a beautiful city”.

The hotel group, which has a memorandum of understanding with the city council to landscape and maintain several roundabouts, has a long history of corporate responsibility with a strong focus on environmental protection and promotion.

“We are so happy that these projects give us a platform to help government in its efforts to combat problems which may arise due to deforestation. This platform also allows us, as a group, to interact with the community. We strongly believe that every effort in planting trees contributes to the wellbeing of the environment in which we live, and has a positive impact on society. Good ethics mean good business,” Olela said.

Some of the officials who attended the function included Blantyre City Mayor, Councillor Wild Ndipo, and Nyambadwe Councillor , Leonard Chibade.

In his address, Ndipo commended Sunbird for being a responsible corporate citizen, asking other companies to emulate the gesture.

Ndipo said tree planting exercises could save the country from floods, observing the occurrence of floods is becoming commonplace in rural and urban areas due to deforestation.

Sunbird Tourism Limited is Malawi’s largest hotel group with eight properties, including Sunbird Mount Soche in Blantyre, Sunbird Ku Chawe in Zomba, Sunbird Nkopola Lodge in Mangochi, Sunbird Livingstonia Beach in Salima, Sunbird Capital Hotel and Sunbird Lilongwe Hotel both in Lilongwe, Sunbird Mzuzu Hotel in Mzuzu and the recently added Sunbird Thawale Lodge at Majete Park in Chikwawa.
