Sunbird handovers teacher’s house

Sunbird KuChawe Tuesday handed over a teacher’s house to Chawe Full Primary School in Zomba.

Speaking during the official handover ceremony, Sunbird KuChawe General Manager, Slyvester Mtambo, said Sunbird KuChawe operates on the principle of Ubunthu.

He said Sunbird believes that they exist and grow because of a good working relationship they have with the community.

He said Sunbird is working with the community in areas of education, climate conservation, health and sanitation.

“We understand that quality basic education is key to national development. We will continue to assist in the efforts of our teachers in creating a strong foundation of our nation by improving their teaching environment. We understand that these students will in few years form the workforce and the clientele of Sunbird KuChawe,” he said.

Head teacher of the school, Aubrey Matoga, who occupies the house hailed Sunbird KuChawe for the gesture.

He said the school faces serious accommodation problem with a total of seven teachers against three houses.

This, he said, negatively affects performance of the school in national examinations.

“We only had two houses and this one makes it three against seven teachers. Other teachers are staying in [Department of] forestry houses. The teachers are too few for a full primary school but we cannot attract more teachers without good and adequate houses and as a result, no student from this school has ever been selected to a boarding secondary school since its inception in 1972,” he said.

The house has been constructed to the tune of over K3 million.
