Sunbird Lilongwe plants 2,000 trees
Sunbird Lilongwe Hotel has planted over 2,000 trees along Kauma sewer line in Lilongwe.
The trees were planted by the hotel’s staff in conjunction with Lilongwe City Council and members of the community at Kauma.
Speaking during the tree-planting exercise, Sunbird Lilongwe, general manager, Virginia Mahata, said the hotel felt obliged to plant trees to conserve the environment.
“We proactively advocate for the reforestation and conservation of the environment, which is prerequisite for sustained human living and economic growth,” said Mahata.
She also said one of the core values of Sunbird is corporate social responsibility through which the company gives back to the community.
She urged all people in the country to plant more trees every year.
“Each one of us needs to take an active role in the planting of trees, starting from around our homes and gardens. With that, Malawi will look green and attractive to tourists,” she said.
In his remarks, Director of Parks Recreation and Environment at Lilongwe City Council, Allan Kwanjana, hailed Sunbird Lilongwe for embarking on a tree-planting exercise.
He also urged members of the community to take care of the trees to ensure their survival
