One of Malawi’s premier resorts SUNBIRD Nkopola has donated 1,300 reading and teaching books to the Mangochi Orphans Educational Training Centre in Makokola Village, T/A Mponda, Mangochi.

The centre, which provides training in education and life skills to 350 pupils and pays fees for 80 secondary school students, gets its income from donors and through small scale activities such as vegetable and fish farming.

Speaking at the handover ceremony, Sunbird Nkopola general manager, Ellard Savala, said the resort appreciates the value of education to the economy and the community in which it operates.

He said the donation demonstrates the company’s commitment towards improved education in the area in light of the fact that these children are the future.

“To improve education, we have to invest in it. We hope that the books will bring significant change to the learning outcome,” said Savala.

In his remarks, Mangochi Orphans Education Training Centre founder and director, Patterson Majonanga, said the books will benefit nursery and primary school learners at the centre as well as secondary school students that use the facilities during their holidays.

‘It takes the whole community to raise a child and we are grateful for any help that comes our way. We do hope that other entities will assist in similar initiatives, for the benefit of the country as these children are our future leaders,” said Majonanga.

Earlier in the year, Sunbird Livingstonia and Sunbird Corporate Office each made similar donations to help encourage reading among learners at an early age.
