The early bird catches the worm. Some Super League teams have started preparations ahead of the new season.

The new football season is expected to kick off on February 26.

Some teams indicated that they started training last week whereas others are expected to start next week.

Lilongwe-based Blue Eagles and Civil Service United regrouped last week whereas Silver Strikers, who finished second in the TNM Super League last season, are expected to start on Tuesday.

Eagles Chairperson Alexander Ngwala said the team regrouped early to give the new technical panel ample time to prepare for the season.

“The technical panel is working hard to keep the players in shape. We believe that by February 26, all the players will be ready,” Ngwala said.

Eagles survived relegation after beating Mighty Wanderers 3-1 at Kamuzu Stadium in the last game of the season.

Following poor showing in the 2021 season, Eagles parted ways with Coach Gerald Phiri Senior and replaced him with Elia Kananji and Christopher Sibale.

However, the club also released six players namely Tony Mbulu, Henry Misinjo, Mphatso Philemon, Brian Msumatiza, Patrick Phiri and Lazarus Nyemera.

On the part of Civil, they started preparations on Tuesday with new and old players.

Civil Team Manager Gabriel Chirwa said the preparations started on a high.

“Everything is going on well. The old and new players are showing some good level of fitness,” Chirwa said.

The Servants, who finished fourth in the TNM Super League with 48 points, also released some players such as goalkeeper Charles Swini as they embarked on rebuilding exercise.

Elsewhere, TN Stars are expected to resume training today whereas newly promoted Dedza Dynamos are expected to start next week.

But TNM Super League champions Nyasa Big Bullets and Wanderers are yet to start preparations.

Bullets Chief Administrator Albert Chigoga they will announce soon.

“We are waiting for a pre-season training plan from the head coach,” Chigoga said.

Coach Kalisto Pasuwa was on holiday in Zimbabwe but is currently in Cameroon watching Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) finals.

Bullets defended the league last season with 62points, four points above runners-up Silver. It was a successful season for both Bullets and Silver after they won Airtel Top 8 Cup and FDH Bank Cup respectively.

Wanderers endured another difficult season, having finished third with 55 points.
