Supporters donate to Ndirande Health Centre

By Isaac Salima:
Football supporters under Mpira Umodzi Supporters Initiative on Saturday donated Personal Protective Equipment to Ndirande Health Centre in Blantyre to help in the fight against Covid-19.
The group which was previously known as MBC Stand Supporters Initiative contributed over K500,000 to buy the items that included face and surgical masks, hand sanitizers, buckets, hand washing soap, first aid boxes and gloves.
The group’s general secretary Charles Mangani said the gesture was part of their contribution to the fight against the disease.
“We understand that the perception people have on football supporters is that we are agents of hooliganism so we are trying to change that. That is why we decided to engage in this noble cause in order to teach others that as supporters we can make a difference in our communities,” Mangani said.
He said they decided to donate to Ndirande Health Centre because it is the hub of football support in Blantyre.
The hospital’s clinician Kenam Libanga hailed the supporters for the gifts.
“We assist people from different parts of Blantyre and these equipment will help us to protect ourselves and our clients. We are lacking a lot of things in our efforts to successfully fight this pandemic and when stakeholders like these come in and assist, we are always grateful,” Libanga said.
The group was formed in 2018 and has been engaging in a number of charity works. The group currently has a membership of over 200 supporters from different teams and occupies MBC Stand at Kamuzu Stadium.
