There were surprises during the Kuimba 10 pre-launch dinner dance organised by Friends of the reggae group Black Missionaries at Mkango Lodge in Blantyre on Wednesday which saw Anthony Makondetsa and Anjiru Fumulani playing together.

Makondetsa is backed by Black Missionaries during his acts and in most cases does not perform together with Anjiru.

The two played front runners during the dinner dance which gave an opportunity to the people to interact with the reggae group but also sample some of their new songs ahead of the launch of Kuimba 10 at Robin’s Park in Blantyre tonight and Lilongwe Golf Club on Sunday.

With drummer Paul Chokani and his brother Takudziwani, keyboardist Gift Thugo and backing vocalist Yanjanani Chumbu missing on the night, Makondetsa and Anjiru were the front runners and backed each other in the songs.

Makondetsa was the first to hit the microphone offering two songs backed by Anjiru before Blacks took over offering some new songs from their latest album including ‘Ndidzaimbabe’ and ‘Tizingocheza,’ and Makondetsa backed Anjiru too.

The two also performed whilst sitting on chairs and only danced towards the end as people were demanding for more sound.

There was no show for some artists billed to perform as they did not turn up but in their absence the audience was treated to a surprise performance from Lilongwe based musician Haxi Momba, who was backed by Super Boys Band and poet Joseph Madzedze.

Kasambwe Brothers Band also reminded the audience of their past exploits dishing out songs such as ‘Mtengo wa Minga.’

Meanwhile after launching Kuimba 10 in Blantyre, Black Missionaries will take the launch to Motel Domwe in Dedza tomorrow.

One of the director’s at Motel Domwe, Gladys Nanyungu, said it would be a historical show since Blacks would be performing at the border-post joint for the first time since releasing their new album.

“Our patrons had been asking us to invite Black Missionaries. We therefore found it necessary to welcome the top reggae band in Malawi to perform in Dedza for the first time since the release of the new album,” she said.
