A suspect in the transferring of UTM leader Saulos Chilima’s name on the voters’ register, from Lilongwe to Chizumulu Island, died in a car accident Tuesday.
The suspect, Sailesi Kampango, died at Linthipe 1 in Dedza District on his way to Chikwawa District after appearing before a Lilongwe court yesterday morning.
Dedza Police Deputy Public Relations Officer, Cassim Manda, said the accident happened at around 3pm.
“The accident has, indeed, happened at Linthipi 1 where Mr Sailesi Kampango, the suspect in the transferring of Dr Saulos Chilima’s name during voting, from Lilongwe to Chizumula Island, was involved in the accident. Unfortunately, he died on the spot,” he said.
Manda said the accident happened when a salon car registration number RU 5494, driven by Kalipo Mhango from Lilongwe, hit a tyre of a truck registration CK4764.
He said the vehicle had four passengers on board and only Kampango died on the spot due to severe head injuries.
He said the driver and the other three passengers sustained minor injuries and were rushed to Dedza District Hospital to where they have been admitted.
Kampango body was taken to Dedza Mortuary.
Kampango was born in 1993 and is from Kasinje Village, Traditional Authority Ganya in Ntcheu.
Manda said the police are investigating the cause of the accident.
Kampango was suspected to have transferred Chilima’s name in the voters’ register from St. Thomas Polling Centre in Lilongwe to Chiteko School at Chizumulu Island.
The then vice-president, Chilima waited for 40 minutes before he was allowed to cast his vote at St. Thomas on May 21 2019.
Malawi Electoral Commission Chairperson Jane Ansah, said they were waiting for the police to pursue the matter.
