Principal suspect in the murder of popular evangelist Shadreck Wame Monday pleaded guilty to the charge and is expected to be sentenced on Wednesday.

Limbani Maliro, the late cleric’s housekeeper, was arrested by the police in Thyolo on November 25, 2016, after a month-long hunt for killers of the evangelist whose body was found in his house in Salima with deep cuts in the head and other parts.

Both Legal Aid Bureau Director Masauko Chankakala and his deputy Trouble Kalua confirmed yesterday that Maliro had pleaded guilty before the High Court sitting in the lakeshore district.

Kalua, who was present in the court when Maliro made his plea, said the Legal Aid Bureau team— representing the convict— made submissions on sentencing.

“I went there as part of the Legal Aid Bureau team. Now that the client has pleaded guilty, everything remains in the hands of the court regarding the sentence that he will get,” Kalua said.

Murder carries a maximum of death sentence in Malawi but there is a moratorium on the punishment.
