Suspected criminal shot in Limbe
A suspected criminal was killed by security guards in Limbe, Blantyre, after a gang invaded Moon Tiger Puffs Company Saturday night.
Limbe Police Deputy spokesperson, Pedzisai Zembeneko, said, in an interview, the suspect was shot by a stray bullet after the guards fired several times in the air to scare away the gang.
“The shooting incident happened after the criminals stormed the company. The security guard shot in the air to scare away the gang but, unfortunately, one was hit by a stray bullet and died on the spot. The remains of the suspected criminal are at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital in Blantyre,” Zembeneko said.
He said the guards used a pump gun in the shooting incident, adding that police have opened a docket as they work on establishing facts as to what happened.
Meanwhile, relatives of the deceased have dismissed police claims that the dead suspect was a criminal. The relatives expressed reservations over police’s claims when they gathered at Limbe Police Station Monday morning to seek clarification.
One of the relatives, Emmanuel Mphepo, said police were not being truthful on the matter.
“We are getting contradictory statements. Our relative was not a criminal. He left home and went to his friend at around 7 pm on Saturday, only for us to get reports that he had been shot dead. We are planning to get the body from the mortuary and conduct a proper burial ceremony,” Mphepo said.
It is not known whether the gun used in the shooting is licensed.
By the time we went to press, doctors were yet to conduct a post-mortem on the body.
