‘Suspend Mike Butao’

By Mphatso Malidadi:

Be Forward Wanderers Supporters Committee has asked the club’s Executive Committee to suspend General Secretary Mike Butao to pave the way for fair investigations into his alleged involvement in financial mismanagement.

Butao, who is being accused of withdrawing about K2 million monthly from the team’s sponsorship coffers to cater for airtime distribution deal with TNM, denies the allegations.

Wanderers Supporters Committee Secretary, Samuel Mponda, said the team should officially announce that Butao has been suspended following the allegations before the supporters react.

“As it is, we can’t work with Butao because he was running the business independently when other committee members were not aware. To ensure that the matter is concluded fairly, we want the executive to announce that Butao has been suspended. If this does not happen, the supporters will take unspecified action,” he said.

Wanderers Chairperson, Gift Mkandawire, earlier told the local press that the team’s supporters must exercise caution by not making rushed conclusions before investigations are over.

“Butao has gone on leave for unspecified period so he is not handling secretarial duties currently,” Mkandawire said Wednesday.

On Sunday, Butao refused to comment on the allegations levelled at him.

“Let’s wait for the club to investigate and give a statement. I have nothing to say,” he said.

TNM Public Relations and Sponsorship Manager, Limbani Nsapato, said it was difficult for them to divulge their client’s information without proper channels.

Recently, Mkandawire accused a section of the team’s supporters and opposing fans of fabricating lies to tarnish the Nomads’ reputation.

He said some members of the committee were ready to step down and emulate former team manager Steve Madeira’s example after he resigned after some fans had accused him of bringing confusion to the team.
