Suzgo Nyirenda signs 5-year Cosafa deal
Council for Southern African Football Associations (Cosafa) has officially appointed outgoing Football Association of Malawi (Fam) General Secretary, Sugzo Nyirenda, as its Head of Competitions.
Nyirenda confirmed this on Wednesday on return from South Africa where he signed a five-year contract as the head of Under-17, 20 and senior competitions.
Nyirenda said he was happy to sign the contract with Cosafa as he will represent Malawi at one of the biggest football associations in Africa.
He admitted that he was mindful of the huge task of heading 14 football associations from the region.
“It was a successful meeting. I am very thankful to all Malawians for their support during the time I have been at Fam. I will start my work [at Cosafa] on December 1. I know that my successor [Alfred Gunda] will have tough times since he is new, but I will be available for him,” Nyirenda said.
Fam has since brought forward its next annual general meeting for its affiliates to vote for an executive member following the resignation of Gunda.
Fam Executive Committee meets every six months but with the vacant post, the body will meet either next month or in January 2017.
Fam’s Legal Advisor, Jabar Alide, on Wednesday said the affiliates will nominate the candidates to compete for the post.
Alide said the process of holding elections to replace Gunda will not wait for the next six months as the constitution stipulates that the vacant position should be filled within a short period of time.
