Swiss national Martin Schaer has called on authorities in the country to focus more on grassroots football if the country is to make strides in the game.

Schaer made the remarks last weekend in Mbayani, Blantyre, during the finals of an under-14 football tournament for boys and girls.

In the boys’ category, Che Mussa Stars edged Likhubula Rangers 1-0 while Che Mussa were crowned champions of the girls’ section following a 1-0 win over Maere Sisters.

Schaer said he organised the tournament as a way of giving back to community members.

“We have been sponsoring such competitions for years now through our football project. So far, we are pleased with the impact made on the ground. We need to promote these youngsters if the country is to make strides in football development,” he said.

Che Mussa Coach Blessings Mbvundula said it was exciting to lift the trophy.

“We are happy with the outcome of our efforts on the pitch. Our appeal to individuals, companies and organisations is that they should come forward to sponsor more of such competitions,” Mbvundula said.

Winning teams were given school materials as a way of supporting their education.

Schaer, a former athlete and founder of Dzipatso Football Academy in Salima District, has lately been in school-building projects.
