Synod plans anti-quota system demonstrations

Church of Central Africa Presbyterian (CCAP) Livingstonia Synod has resolved to hold peaceful demonstrations to force the government to abolish the current system of selecting students into public schools, popularly known as quota system.
Synod General Secretary, Reverend Levi Nyondo, confirmed the plans to hold the demonstrations but refused to disclose dates and other details of their protest.
“We are holding our own demonstrations because we feel that the government is deliberately punishing our children with the quota system. Remember, we have been saying that quota system is evil and must be abolished,” Nyondo said.
The reaction by the synod follows the selection of candidates of this year’s Primary School Leaving Certificate (PSLC) examination into secondary schools allegedly on regional lines.
The synod has erected a sign post at its headquarters in Mzuzu with a message ‘Against anti-quota system, same sex marriages, abortion and land bills’.
Livingstonia Synod has 29 presbyteries with over 250 congregations.
Meanwhile, a separate group of citizens, called Anti-Quota System Movement, has started mobilising resources for the September 5 demonstrations.
The protests are aimed at forcing the government to nullify 2019 PSLC examination results.
The group’s general secretary, Dan Msowoya, said this Tuesday.
“Our demonstrations are on. If the minister, who we are meeting on August 31 2019, decides not to accept nullifying the selection results, we are also going further by seeking legal action if dialogue and contact fail,” Msowoya said.
Recently, Education Ministry officials said the government selection of students to secondary schools was on merit.
Malawi National Examinations Board also denied that it applied quota system in the selection of candidates in the 2019 PSLCE into public secondary schools.
