Tabitha Chawinga bags another award in Italy
Malawi National Women’s Football Team captain and Inter Milan Women striker Tabitha Chawinga continues to hog the limelight in Europe following her outstanding performances,
The consistent performances saw her lifting the eBay Values Award for the month of February in Italy on Thursday.
The award is given to a top-level soccer player who is distinguished by her behaviour.
According to Sport Business, the Italian Football Federation signed a three-year agreement with eBay to support the women’s game.
Tabitha, who is on loan from Chinese side Wuhan Jiangda, is writing her own piece of history in the Serie A Feminine with five star performances which have seen her top the goalscorers’ chart.
Speaking from her Italian base, the former DD Sunshine superstar said she was excited with the award.
“I thank God for everything. I feel honoured and humbled to receive this award. This will motivate me,” she said.
Tabitha is enjoying a season of her life in Italy having also won the Player-of-the-Month accolade for September and the African Female Best Player based in Europe award for the same month.
National Women’s Football Association chairperson Suzgo Ngwira hailed Tabitha for her exploits.
’’Tabitha deserves the award. She is a true leader on and off the pitch. She is a shining example,’’ Ngwira said.
Tabitha has been in fine form for Inter Women having been involved in 22 goals this season.
She is in contention for the golden boot award with 16 goals and has directly assisted in creating six goals in the Italian Serie A Feminine.
Cristiana Girelli of Juventus Ladies is her closest challenger with 13 goals.
If she wins the award, Tabitha will become the first African woman player to do so in Italy.
Tabitha has a history of winning golden boot awards in her debut season after winning in Sweden with 35 goals while playing for second-tier side Krokom Dvarsatts IF before liftying it again in China with Jiang Sunning having scored 17 goals.
