TRUE LEADER—Tabitha on arrival in South Africa

Malawi Women’s National Football Team, the Scorchers, have received a timely boost after Inter Milan Ladies striker Tabitha Chawinga joined camp ahead of the 2022 Hollywoodbets Cosafa Cup in Gqeberha, South Africa.

The Scorchers arrived in Gqeberha, South Africa Tuesday in the morning but Tabitha joined her teammates later in the afternoon.

Tabitha has joined the Scorchers camp just two days after making a dream debut when she scored in a 4-1 victory over Parma in Serie A.

In an interview from South Africa Tuesday, Tabitha said she was looking forward to helping the Scorchers.

“It is always good to play for my country. We have a very good squad and there is renewed hope in the team,” she said.

However, Tabitha will only take part in two opening Cosafa Cup matches against Botswana at Nelson Mandela University Stadium on Friday and Comoros Islands on Monday at the same venue.

She will miss the last Group C match against holders Tanzania on Wednesday next week. Scorchers newly appointed coach Lovemore Fazili named a 22-member squad for the tournament.

Nigeria based striker Fazila Chiyembekezo and Lusaka Dynamos defender Chimwemwe Madise are also in the squad.

Vice-Captain Madyina Ngulube, Sabina Thom, Asimenye Simwaka and Patricia Nyirenda are some of the experienced players.

However, Temwa Chawinga and Zainab Kapanda have been ruled out of the Cosafa Cup due to club commitments and injury respectively.

Leader of delegation Muhammad Selemani, who is also Football Association of Malawi (Fam) Executive Member, said the team arrived in Port Elizabeth after spending a night in Johannesburg.

Malawi reached their first ever Cosafa Women’s Championship final last year but lost 1-0 to Tanzania.

They also dumped South Africa out of the Cosafa Cup with a 3-2 victory in the semifinals last year.

For two consecutive editions in 2020 and 2021, the Scorchers reached Cosafa Cup semifinals.
