Malawi national women’s football team Captain, Tabitha Chawinga, has commenced discussions over contract extension with her Chinese side Jiangsu Sunning.

Tabitha is in the final months of her contract, having moved to China last year.

The striker has been on the radar of some European giants, including Lyon of France.

Tabitha said there were possibilities of extending the contract.

“We have already started discussions and talks are progressing well. I am enjoying my football in China and my life has greatly improved. I want to play for at least another two years in China before returning to Europe,” Tabitha said in an interview after watching Silver Strikers beat Mzuni 2-1 in a TNM Super League match at Silver Stadium.

The Chinese Women’s Footballer of the Year took advantage of her brief visit to the country to donate track suits worth K280,000 to her former club DD Sunshine.

“This is the club that groomed me to be where I am today and I have a responsibility to give back to the team. I also want to inspire the team’s players so that they continue working hard to realise their dreams,” Tabitha said.

DD Sunshine Coach, Andrew Chikhosi, described the donation as a motivation to the players.

“We are very thankful to Tabitha for what she is doing to the team. This is motivating the players to do well in their games,” Chikhosi said.

Tabitha is in the country for a week-long holiday, having helped her side to win the Fifa Chinese Women’s Football Cup last week.

She scored 15 goals in the competition to win the Golden Boot Award.

The Malawian icon also won China’s Golden Boot Award last season after scoring 17 goals.

She moved to China after spending three years in Sweden, where she won two golden boot awards in three seasons.
