Malawi national women’s football team Captain, Tabitha Chawinga, continued her impressive performance in China when she scored a brace to inspire Jiangsu Sunning to a 4-2 victory over Wuhan Chedu Jiangda in the 2019 FA Cup on Saturday.
Sunning went through 10-2 on aggregate and will face Shanghai Rural Commercial Bank next week.
This is Sunning’s second cup final this year after their victory in the Chinese Women’s Cup where they defeated Dalian FC last month.
Tabitha could not hide her excitement after helping her club achieve the feat in one month.
“It always feels great to reach a cup final. Our performance was excellent and we look forward to winning the final. We are going to give it our best shot to emerge victorious,” she said.
Tabitha and her younger sister, Temwa, are expected to be part of the She-Flames squad to face Kenya in the second round of the 2020 Olympic Games qualifiers.
Malawi defeated Mozambique 14-1 over two legs, with Tabitha and Temwa leading the onslaught.
Tabitha was named Chinese Women’s Footballer of the Year last season after a solid performance.
She also won the Golden Boot award in the Chinese Women’s Super League with 17 goals, seven above Asisat Oshoola of Nigeria, who is now with Barcelona Ladies FC in Spain.
The former DD Sunshine striker moved to China in 2018 after spending three years in Sweden where she won two Golden Boot awards.
Remarkable exploits in foreign leagues have also seen Tabitha earning nominations for the Confederation of African Football women’s footballer of the year.
