Tabitha Chawinga nets 13th goal

Scorchers captain Tabitha Chawinga continued her scoring spree when she scored in Inter Milan Women’s 3-0 win over Sassuolo in Italy on Sunday.
This was Tabitha’s 13th goal of the campaign and cemented her chase for the Golden Boot award in her debut season in Italian Serie A Women League. The Malawian tops the scorers’ chart with 13 goals, two above Cristiana Girreli of Juventus Ladies.
Valentina Guacinti of Roma and Ellisa Polli of Inter Women have each scored nine goals.
Tabitha rounded off the scoring in the 93rd minute after goals from Cameroonian Ajara Nchout and Ghoutia Kachourni.
Tabitha said her focus was on helping the team this season.
“I am always happy when the team wins. Our target is to fight for the title. Anything can happen,” Tabitha said.
Following the win, Inter Women are fourth in Serie A Women with 32 points from 16 matches, 10 points behind leaders Roma.
However, Inter Women are just two points behind second placed Juventus.
National Women’s Football Association Chairperson Suzgo Ngwira said she was happy that Malawian players were shining abroad.
“This is good news for Malawi. We will be able to export more players,” she said.
Tabitha is on a season-long loan from Chinese side Wuhan Jiangda.
She has already won two awards in Italy when she was voted Player of the Month for September.
She also won the African female player based in Europe award for the same month.
The former Jiang Sunning striker has also been nominated for the Most Valuable Player in Serie A Women league.
While in China, Tabitha won the Golden Boot award four times in five seasons including winning the accolade in her debut season when she scored 17 goals.
