Tabitha Chawinga nets brace

Scorchers captain Tabitha Chawinga continues to hog the limelight in Italy as she leads the scorers’ chart with nine goals this season.

The deadly striker scored a brace as Inter Milan Women beat Pomigliano 2-1 away on Saturday. She scored the first goal in the 53rd minute of the match before completing her brace in the 76 minute.

Ana Lucia Martinez scored the consolation goal for Pomigliano at the dot of full time.

In an interview from Italy, Tabitha said her target was to help the team win the Serie A Women title this season.

“I thank God for everything. The performance of the team was good,” Tabitha said.

The Scorchers striker, who is on a season-long loan deal from Chinese side Wuhan Jiangda, is on course to winning the Italian Serie A Women golden boot award in her debut season.

Tabitha missed some matches due to injury this season.

Scorchers coach Lovemore Fazili hailed Tabitha for her impressive performance in Italy.

“This is good news for us. We need all the players to be at their best all the time,” Fazili said.

Inter Women’s are fourth on the log table with 22 points from 12 matches, eight points behind leaders Roma.

Tabitha was named player of the month for September when she scored four goals in four matches.

Additionally, she was named Africa best female player based in Europe for the month of September.

The Malawian is a proven goal-scorer, having won three golden boot awards in the Chinese Women’s League in five seasons including in her debut season when she netted 17 goals.

In Sweden, she also won the golden boot award in her debut season when she scored 35 goals despite joining the league while in progress.
