Tabitha Chawinga nominated for Serie A Women top award

Scorchers captain and Inter Milan Women striker Tabitha Chawinga has been nominated for the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award in Italian Serie A Women’s League.

The Malawian striker has been in form for Inter Women this season, having scored 12 goals.

She is the leading goal-scorer with three goals above her teammate Ellisa Polli.

However, the voting process closed yesterday.

At the time of closing, Tabitha was third with 18 percent, far behind Italian Cristiana Girelli of Juventus, who was leading at 47 percent.

Brazilian Andressa Alves Da Silva of AS Roma was second with 24 percent whereas Emilie Haavi was fourth on 11 percent. The winner is expected to be announced soon.

Tabitha felt honoured to be nominated for the award.

“I am really motivated. Let us wait and see,” she said in brief response.

She scored a brace in Inter Women’s 4-1 victory over rivals AC Milan on Saturday.

The Malawian could become the first African female player to win the golden boot award.

The Scorchers striker, who is on loan from Wuhan Jiangda, won the Player of the Month for September before she was named best African female player based in Europe for the same month.

Tabitha became the first Malawian female footballer to move to Europe when she signed for Swedish third-tier side Krokom/ Dvarsatts in 2014. In her debut season, she scored 39 goals despite joining the league while in progress.

She moved to China after spending four years in Sweden and joined Jiang Sunning.

In her debut season in China, she won the Golden Boot Award with 17 goals. Tabitha won two Player of the Year Awards in China.
